Suggest Methods To Control Cholesterol Levels

Hi I am having trygliceride level 495, hdl 38 , LDL 86 and total cholesterol 210. I was on fenofibrate for some time and then I stopped it. I consume alcohol 2-3 times a week in a moderate way. Can you please suggest on how I can lower my figures. I take healthy food with very little or no fried food.

You need to avoid alcohol as your triglycerides are very high. You can take fish oil supplements to lower triglycerides after consulting your doctor for appropriate dosage. Even if you do not eat fried foods, make sure to cut down on the intake of saturated fats and cholesterol in diet to lower total cholesterol. If you are a non-vegetarian choose lean cuts of meat, skinless chicken, eggwhites only and fish. Use low fat dairy products like skimmed/toned/double toned milk instead of full cream milk, low fat cheese and yoghurt. Avoid butter, clarified butter, margarine and coconut oil in diet. Use refined vegetable oil like canola, soyabean, olive or rice bran and limit its intake to not more than 2-3 teaspoons in a day per person. Avoid refined starches like white flour/white rice, sugary foods and drinks, rich gravies and oily curries.

Have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables as raw salads.

Exercise daily by walking for 30-45 minutes and limit sedentary pursuits like watching TV and sitting for long hours on computer.

De-stress regularly by meditating, listening to soothing music or engaging in an activity that you enjoy. Deep breathing in fresh air also helps to reduce stress levels.

Hope this will help you in making effective changes in your diet and lifestyle to lower cholesterol and improve overall health and well-being.

Cardiologist Dr. Dr. Meriton Siqeca's  Response
Hi. I carefully read your concern. Thank you for asking on HCM.

Well, first, I recommend reducing alcohol intake to the maximum dosage allowed per day (i.e. 30 g ethanol/day - a glass of wine, a beer). I also recommend reinstituting fenofibrate on your therapy, to fight high triglyceride levels. Also, my suggestions for diet are: low salt, rich in fibres (green vegetables and fruit) and a 60 minute physical activity per day. Repeat blood test for triglycerides and cholesterol after three months.

I hope I was helpful. Feel free to ask me again.
