I have really bad anxiety I have tried so hard to fight it I don't want to be put on tablets as I think they make things a lot worse especially as I'm young and don't want to rely on tablets that could potentially become addictive I'm really worries about myself it's been going on for a year now I need help more then ever some times I can't even sleep till it's light out because I am trying to stop myself having a panic attack it's ruining my life I had a job interview the other day and one just occurred it was so bad it's taking over me please help
Hi, thanks for the query. Based on the symptoms described by you; you surely are having difficult to control anxiety symptoms & need some help. First step is clarifying your exact nature of symptoms, whether they are situation bound or occur anytime, are there any specific fears (like job interview fears you described here) for reaching a definitive diagnosis & formulating a treatment plan. Let me assure that current set of antianxiety medications (go by a generic name SSRI drugs) are neither addictive nor they have any troublesome side effects. On the contrary they are extremely effective & they can give you rapid symptom relief & excellent quality of life!! As anxiety symptoms often arise due to certain neurochemical changes in brain & certain maladaptive behaviour patterns; thus SSRI drug treatment is often needed for 6 months-1 year. Lastly, there are many effective NON DRUG behavioural management techniques which go by the name of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), exposrue & response prevention (ERP), deep breathing exercises, autogenic relaxation techniques which are usually taught by Psychiatrist & Psychologist & shall be helpful to alleviate your anxiety symptoms. Only flip side with these methods is they take slightly longer (sometimes 4-6 months also!) for getting symptom relief. Hence I would advice you to use a combination of medications (SSRI) + CBT for effective relief. Consult a Psychiatrist. Good luck
