Systolic blood pressure (SBP) up to 150 mm Hg is fine at 60 years of age. But SBP above 150 mm Hg is abnormally high. Normal range is 120 – 140 (systolic)/60 – 90 (diastolic) mm Hg. In most people, systolic blood pressure rises steadily with age due to increasing
stiffness of arteries. Constantly
high BP is a bigger headache than taking medicines. Constantly high BP predisposes to various cardiovascular complications which might be life threatening. So do not ignore high BP.
Advice
1. Continue prescribed medicines as suggested by doctor
2. Do not stop or change any medicine without doctor’s permission
3. Regular exercise at least 30 minutes for 5 days in a week. The best exercises for maintaining BP are walking, jogging, cycling, swimming and dancing
4. Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on
saturated fat and cholesterol
5. Avoid
smoking, alcohol, coffee and caffeinated beverages
6. Lose extra weight if you are
overweight and keep your
body mass index between 19 and 25. BMI is calculated by formula BMI = Weight in Kilograms / (height in meters x height in meters)
7. Reduce metal
stress because stress activates sympathetic system and increases BP
8. Measure BP regularly and consult your doctor if it goes out of normal range
