Suggest Pain Management Treatment After Fusion Surgery In Neck

I have , and have had Cervical Dystonia , neurological, for 16 years. I am 57 years old. Was very athletic my entire life until last year. I learned proper exercise for my condition years ago. I broke my neck, c2, one year ago, do to constant abuse on my cervical region. No big weights ever. Dr. Hadley, U.A.B.-Kirkman clinic, did surgery using bone from my lower back to repair broken tooth(?) at c2, and also did fusion Surgery in my neck, plus more. My family Dr. has me on 3 Roxicodone a day. It helps so much-but I need at least 4per day or something stronger. My pain level is at 100, on a scale from 1-10, after 4 hours. Please-suggestion!!!!!!!!

Hello,

As you have persistent pain even after surgery, I recommend the following:
1) NSAIDs like Ibuprofen and Aceclofenac can be taken along with muscle relaxants like Chlorzoxazone daily twice for 1 week. This medication can't be used if you have:
i) Congestive heart failure
ii) Bleeding tendencies
iii) Severe gastritis and gastric ulcer
2) These can be combined with tab. Nexium 40 mg daily once before food to avoid gastric irritation
3) Opioids are a good option. As you have used Roxicodone, you may now try Tramadol daily twice for 1 week.
If the pain doesn't come down, please do consult your orthopedic surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
