Suggest Remedies For A Laceration On The Shin

My father fell and created a laceration on his shin. He takes 2.5mg of Coumidin per day. We ve taped the wound securely. He may need stitches but the ER is not an option. Can he wait until the morning for a visit to his family doctor. What should we do in the meantime?

Hello! Sorry to hear about that.
Blood thinners are usually advisable to be stopped before any surgical procedure. However, suturing the laceration may not require stopping of the blood thinners. It is important to clean the wound thoroughly with a running tap water and apply some neosporin ointment or powder and keep it covered. A laceration needs to be sutured as early as possible not exceeding 24 hours. Over the counter pain medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be given for pain and also helps reduce the inflammation. Hope he feels better soon. Take care!
