Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was imitating how my dog eats a treat off of his nose, and strained my jaw. There is a small lump toward the facial side of my ear lobe, and sounds like soft grinding when I open my jaw fairly wide. This onset overnight. Very mild pain to touch and opening jaw. Did I mess myself up or can I keep my yap shut and be ok in a few days?
I can understand your concern. Sometimes when the jaw is opened too wide, it is possible to subluxate the joint which can cause strain on the muscles around the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) and cause such lump and pain while opening the mouth.
This can be treated at home by taking muscle relaxant such as Dan-MR (Diclofenac Sodium 50 mg + Acetaminphen 500 mg + Chlorzoxazone 250 mg ) twice a day for 5 days. Heat application over the lump can help. In addition, refrain from opening the jaw too wide for about a week to 10 days. Application of local Diclogesic Gel such as Volini will help too.
If the lump and pain do not subside in 10 days, I suggest that you should see a dentist or oral surgeon for the clinical examination of TMJ and further investigations.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
