Suggest Remedies For Cerebral Atrophy In An Elderly Woman

My mom has cerebral atrophy. The neurologist said she has large water sacs on her brain but her brain is shrinking. Is there anything I can do to possibly slow down this process. She is 76 and has been showing signs of forgetfulness and has been falling for maybe a year and a half. She just had a hospital and rehab stay and her mental state has worsened in the last 5 weeks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sorry to hear about her disease. Dementia (forgetful and loss of brain function) is not uncommon in late ages.

While there are few causes which may be reversible, but many causes are may not be.

I am afraid the one shown in her scan looks to be irreversible there are few drugs like memantine that may improve her memory, but the disease is difficult to reverse.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
