Suggest Remedies For Coughing Up Of Phlegm Despite Being On Pneumonia Treatment
I was treated for pneumonia about a month ago. Still coughing up clear phlem and pulled muscle on right side rib cage about 2 weeks ago. Nagging pain when I coughed but I could live with it. This morning I started coughing and felt a ripping or tearing on the right side and now the pain is a 9 1/2 out of 10. Problem is I need to cough but the pain is too great. Can my doctor help?
It is good to know that you have been treated for pneumonia, after treatment you should take plenty of water(one liter per day) to keep yourself adequately hydrated. That can help to loosen the phlegm in your lungs. Avoid taking alcohol at all costs. Stay at rest & avoid any stress & anxiety.
Since you are still coughing phlegm & have pain chest; you should get a follow-up treatment done. Sometimes, complications occur & fluid accumulates in between the lining of the lungs (empyema/pleural effusion) & if the infection spreads it becomes an abscess. Get physically examined, evaluated & treated. You may have to go through repeat Imaging & Blood tests. In the meantime for pain, take Ibuprofen or paracetamol.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
