Suggest Remedies For Enlarged Ear Drum Causing Hearing Trouble

i had pnemonia and an ear infection that was treated with z-pak. during the course of the ear infection I lost hearing in my right ear. I had gone back to my doctor and she put me on steroids, she said my ear drum was enflamed and enlarged. It has been another week and I still cannot hear well (similar to being under water). What else can i do?

Hi,

Noted your history of pneumonia and ear infection, Doctor told about enlarged and inflamed ear drum, has blocked ear on right side, no relief as yet.
Your history is suggestive of respiratory tract infection caused by bacteria hence the pneumonia part got over.
Coughing or blowing of nose increase the pressure in the nasopharynx are causing the push in of air and infected material in the middle ear cavity. This in turn causse the fluid accumulation in a close-cavuty of middle ear and if the ear drum does not ruture or operated upon the fluid takes a lots of time say up to 3 weeks of proper care and treatment.
This is why the ear is still blocked.
I woulod advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult an ENT Surgeon for Endoscopy.
Continue the treatment for few more weeks as would advised.
Do not blow nose.
Ask your ENT Id typanotomy or myringotomy surgery to remove the fluid will help at this situation for early and proper recovery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
