Suggest Remedies For High Blood Pressure

My 61 year old brother, who smokes and drinks beer every night, has high blood pressure. Its about 175 over 108 so his doctor put him on 40 mg of licinipril once a day a number of months ago. Pressure still did not come down so doctor added 25 mg of metoprolol twice a day last week and pressure still has not come down. I keep pestering him to contact his doctor again before he has a stroke. He is about ten pounds overweight. Any comments will be appreciated. Brenda

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

First of all, he should do an ECHO on his heart to assess the ejection fraction. Second he should change his lifestyle, for example,he should decrease salt intake, besides avoiding fat-rich meals.

Smoking, alcohol intake and obesity can cause deterioration to his case. To avoid stoke he should take Aspirin 160 mg twice per day after meals, besides taking anti-hypertensive drug.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mustafa, Neurologist
