Suggest Remedies For Persistent Pain In The Back Above The Ribcage

I have had pain in my back above my rib cage on the left side for the last 10 years. It seems to be exacerbated by repetitive movement at my waist level. I am 5 1 tall so often have to reach up to do things that would be at other peoples normal level. When I have these spasms and what I would call muscular pain they last for about 1-2 weeks. It is happening more often now. I have tried physical therapy and chiropractors and they relief the pain temporarily but as soon as I do something it will flare up. What course of action is next. General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Persistent pain in the back above rib cage is commonly indicative of Costochondritis, Myofascial pain, pressure on the spinal nerve due to herniated disc, injury to the muscles, ligaments and discs, overuse or muscle strain. It can sometimes be due to IBS, gastritis, GERD, etc.

To get rid of the pain you should change the mattress where you sleep, maintain BMI & correct posture, take fiber rich food, avoid constipation & take laxatives at bed time. Stay hydrated. You can take antacids, muscle relaxants & acetaminophen for relieve of pain. You are suggested to get clinically assessed to rule out herniated discs, costochondritis, slipped disc, spinal infection, etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
