Hi, I had equalizing pressure tubes put in my ears back in February 2016. my right ear has been having pressure for about 3 weeks and now starting today sharp shooting pains. My ear tube is not clogged from wax as I can release the pressure most of the time. My doctors office has not called me back and I was wondering if this is something I should go to a walk in clinic for or can I take something over the counter to help with the pressure/pain until I can see the doctor? Thank you. -Tiffany
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have sharp pain in ears which is because of ear infection which sometimes remain persistent and leads to recurrent otitis media and ear pain. It also seems to me that you have eustachian tube dysfunction as per your symptoms or due to sinusitis .I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis. Doctor may examine by otoscopic to check level of infection. Doctor may order throat swab test , viral culture test , endoscopy , CT scan of sinuses and allergy test to confirm the diagnosis . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin or penicillin at least for 10 days along with decongestant , analgesic and anti inflammatory. I would also suggest you to keep ears dry and take Ibuprofen for ear pain. You should do warm saline gargles and apply warm dry compresses to external ear . Taking steam would be very helpful.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
