General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Chronic cough (lasting more than 8 weeks) , can be due to different possible causes but the most common are: (1) post nasal drip
(2) reflux
(3)asthma

With a history of smoking, this is also a very possible cause as well.

Persons may have more than one factor contributing to the cough, in your case, reflux, post nasal drip and smoking may be contributing.

Treatment would involve: (1) smoking cessation

(2)treatment of the reflux with lifestyle changes (diet changes, weight loss of any excess weight, elevating head when laying down)and medication

(3)post nasal drip treatment with anti histamines/decongestants which are over the counter,it can take 2 to 3 weeks for a response

I hope this helps
