Suggest Remedies For Soreness And Tenderness On Thighs After Being Bitten By Dog

I was bitten by 3 dog (not sure if 1 or all bit me) about 4-5 weeks ago when I was running. Although I did get bit a time or two I did not get bitten badly. Nothing we deep and all the places that the skin was broken was on my left thigh. I went to the doctor immediately afterwards and they cleaned the wounds, I got a tetanus and I went on my way. I went and filed a report with the sheriff as well. The dogs supposedly were checked on by the health department/animal services a couple of weeks after the attack and the dogs were in good health. The thigh did bruise pretty badly and was sore but not bad enough to cause a limp or anything, just tender to the touch. The bruising has gone away and the cuts are healed. Since then the area has remained a little tender to the touch, but this morning I woke up and is very sore with movement. I guess it could be unrelated but it is in the same place the tenderness was before (and still is tender to the touch). What should I do and should I be concerned?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.

Noted the history of dog-bites, tetanus prophylaxis, tender thigh area and so on.
Sudden development of tenderness in the area of dog-bites after 4 to weeks is a cause of concern as you have to get checked for the following:
Cellulitis.
Abscess formation.
Muscle necrosis and so on.
I would advise you the following in such a situation.
Why was not the anti-rabies vaccine given, be sure about it and insist as per the prevailing practices in your area after dog-bit.
Clinical examination, preferably by a General Surgeon.
Relevant investigations of blood to see for diabetes, infection.
Ultrasonography of the affected area or MRI to see for the internal infection and condition of the soft tissues.
If there is any collection then go for incision and drainage.
Further management as per the cause found should help you the most.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
