Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i seem to have bradycardia due to the beta blocker sotalol. I take 80 mg twice daily. My resting heart rate is often about 50. can i switch to a different beta blocker that will not slow my heart rate so much? i would like to avoid use of a pacemaker. that would seem a radical first treatment under these circumstances. i am 62 years old and have paroxysmal afib.
Sotalol belongs to the group of medications known as beta blockers that is used in the treatment of atrial fibrillation and arrhythmia or irregular heart beat. It may cause bradycardia. Sotalol is not recommended to use in patients with significant bradycardia where heart rate is less than 50 beats/min. According to some clinical studies, 13% of patients taking Sotalol may develop sinus bradycardia or heart rate less than 60 beats/min.
So, if anyone experiences sinus bradycardia during taking this medication, he or she should stop taking this medication and inform the prescribing doctor promptly for medical help, because bringing down the heart rate more, may cause dizziness and lightheadedness. The prescribing doctor will change this medication and chose another medication for him or her.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
