Suggest Remedy For Chills, Profuse Sweating And Fever In An Elderly Person

My husband is 52 years old and has been in the hospital 4 times in 120 days. His symptoms are chills, profuse sweating, rigors, no fever. He always has an elevated white blood cell level along with a high lactic acid level and smooth cell antibody level. No one can figure out what is wrong with him

Dr. Hanif warmly welcomes you with thanks for a consult!

It shows some subclinical infection (I suspect in his case a liver disease). Increased WBC counts are mostly seen in infections. Chills and profuse sweating may be sue to fluid and electrolyte imbalances, glucose levels derangements in blood, or again due to subclinical infections.

He has high lactic acid levels (lactic acid levels more than 5 mmol/L and pH LESS THAN 7.35). It is called lactic acidosis and is seen in excessive exercise or in liver disease, vitamin B deficiency, or in some cancers.

Autoimmune hepatitis is one of the major causes for raised smooth muscle antibody (SMA)-also called as Actin antibody.

I have seen a large number of patients with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis-a disease of the biliary tree of the liver, in which every 2nd patient gets raised SMA.

Hepatitis C and some cancers also come up with a raised SMA.

What is SMA? It is an autoantibody-meaning the body has started fighting against its own normal tissues.

Consult a physician for complete diagnostics tests of the liver and biliary system and a CT/MRI study of the body to rule out any tumor in the body. Ultrasound guided Liver biopsy, liver function tests and screening for autoimmune hepatitis is needed.
