Suggest Remedy For Chronic Coughing And Wheezing While Sleeping

I have a 3 year old. Often when he is napping he will start coughing and wheezing. I m the sitter. He hasn t been diagnosed with Asthma (not to my knowledge anyway) but it does run in his family. There are other times he wheezes as well but almost daily when he is napping. Is there anything I can do to help ease this for him while in my care? is there anything over the counter that could help? He is not on any medications.

Hi,

Chronic coughing and wheezing during sleep in a 3-year-old child can have various underlying causes, such as asthma, allergies, or respiratory infections. Consult with a pediatrician about this. In the meantime, here are some general remedies that may help alleviate symptoms:
* Maintain a clean sleep environment: Ensure the child's sleeping area is free of dust, allergens, and irritants. Regularly clean bedding, vacuum the room, and minimize exposure to triggers such as pet dander or cigarette smoke.
* Elevate the head of the bed: Raising the head of the child's mattress slightly may help reduce coughing and wheezing during sleep. This can be done by placing a firm pillow or cushion under the mattress, elevating the upper body.
* Use a humidifier: Dry air can irritate the airways, leading to coughing and wheezing. A cool mist humidifier can add moisture to the air and help soothe the respiratory passages. Prevent the growth of mold or bacteria by cleaning the humidifier regularly.
* Manage allergies: If allergies are suspected, identify and minimize exposure to allergens that trigger symptoms. This may include dust mites, pollen, or certain foods. Consult with a pediatrician or allergist for proper allergy testing and management strategies.
* Ensure proper hydration: Make sure the child is adequately hydrated throughout the day, as it can help thin mucus and ease coughing. Offer plenty of fluids, such as water or diluted fruit juices, avoiding excessive sugary drinks.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
