Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have high blood pressure and take losartan 100mg and amlodipine 5mg once a day. My blood pressure is still running high (145/95) and it was suggested that my amlodipine could be increased to 10mg/day. I will talk to my doctor about this but I just wanted to find out if this is a possibility to get my BP lower. Or should my doctor consider a new direction. I was on lisinopril at first. It worked great, but it made me cough all the time. Any suggestions before I see my physician in two weeks.
The dosage of anti-hypertensive drugs should be titrated in relation to reading of B.P. These should be increased or decreased always in a gradual manner, adjusting the dose every 5-7 days till the BP readings are stable at a desired level. In your case, if your BP remains high, then definitely there may be a need to increase dose of amlodipine or adding some other drug to your regimen preferably some diuretic like hydrochlorothiazide or chlorthalidone etc.
In your case you may also increase the dose of amlodipine to 7.5 mg in the first instance & if it does not resolve the problem of hypertension, then you may increase the dose to 10 mg. This gradual increase of amlodipine dose will avoid the risk of low BP also.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
