Suggest Remedy For Constipation

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here...
my baby is 17 months old, she has been constipated on off for 2 months, drs have prescribed mild laxitive to be added to her drinks 3 times day. She continues to pass stool after 5 days, very hard foul smell and very painful for her. She has continuous high temperature off and on for 10 days, she is currently being treated for an upper respiratory viral infection with infected tonsils. She has been on fluids for last 3 days (as she cannot eat cos of her sore throat) and has not passed any stool nor diarrhoea considering she has started a course of amoxycillin today, we control the fever with calpol (paracetamol) and nurofen.
Could constipation have anything to do with the high fever she has been having for the pass 10 days?

Hi,

Constipation may be caused by several issues. However, you should try first with changing lifestyle and dietary habits.

You need to increase fiber intake. Good fiber sources include bran and other whole grains found in cereals, breads, and brown rice, vegetables such as brussels sprouts, carrots, and asparagus, Fresh fruits, or dried fruits such as raisins, apricots, and prunes Beans.

Also, you should exercise regularly. Moving your body will keep your bowels moving, too.

Second, you may at times need to try a laxative such as Fleet Phospho-Soda, Milk of Magnesia, or glycerin suppositories.

If there wont be improvement on these measures, you should consider doing diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy, anal sphincter manometry and food allergy testing.

In some cases, it may be also signed of tumours so it should be ruled out if symptoms persist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
