Suggest Remedy For Difficulty In Emptying Bladder Due To Presence Of Kidney Cysts
my husband, age 72, had to be taken to the ER last Wednesday with stomach pain and had been having trouble for about a month empting his bladder. Ultra Sound showed thickening of wall of bladder, and when they put a catheter in there was over 1 1/2 liters of dark urine that came out. He is sill on a catheter and scheduled for another US/CT on Tuesday. No fever and not sign of infection. The scan at the ER found a few cysts on his kidneys. He is a fit person, sr Olympian , and almost never sick. He has lost about 8 lbs over the past month or so...give or take a pound or two. The Urologist plans to scope after this next Ultra Sound.
Urine retention is unlikely caused by cysts in the kidneys. Most cysts in the kidneys don't cause any symptoms or any problems. Urine retention in men is usually caused by an enlarged prostate but other causes are possible (medications, nerve issues, etc.). The urologist has a good plan and a cystoscopy and ultrasound are appropriate next steps.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Timothy Wong, General & Family Physician
