Suggest Remedy For Dizziness And Profuse Sweating After Hernia Surgery

My son has been recovering from his 3rd hiatal hernia surgery which was done in January. It s been a rough recovery but he s been doing better the last 2 months. The last 2 weeks though he s been lightheaded, dizzy and nauseaus. We aren t sure if it s related to his surgery or something entirely different. With the last surgery/revision the surgeon tied down his stomach pretty tight and he s unable to vomit, when he s nauseaus he gets dry heaves and retches uncontrollably, has been to ER countless times to get it under control so he takes promethazine and other meds at first sign of nausea to keep that under control. We don t really know what to do about this recent bout of dizziness, lightheadedness, profuse sweating and nausea or if it s even related to the surgery or something else.

Hi,

Noted the history about your son undergoing 3 Hiatus Hernia surgery, uncontrollable nausea, retching, heaves lightheadedness and dizziness, not sure about the origin/cause of such symptoms.
Hiatus hernia is a specialized surgery and the results are variable as the type of surgery includes closing hte hernia defect in the diaphragm and rotation of upper part of stomach around esophagus.
This can make things pretty tight after development of fibrosis as a natural process of healing and so on.
Hence the retching and nausea can be explained wtih such a procedure.
Other symptoms such as lightheadedness, dizziness and profuse sweating can be secondary to the first effects and surgery or can have different cause altogether.
Hence I would advise you to take him to the PCP and get a clinical evaluation, examination and investigations to see for other causes like any close cavity infection, typhoid, malaria or so on.
Additional investigations like X-ray Chest, Ultrasonography, CT scan of abdomen and Upper GI Endoscopy will help further to find or rule out other causes.
Once the cause is found treatment may be easy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
