Suggest Remedy For Dry Cough During H1N1 Influenza

I had H1N1 influenza almost 4 weeks ago. Took Tamiflu until I developed a rash and was told to discontinue it after 5 of the 10 doses. Felt pretty good but somewhat tired since then. After about two weeks the headache and sore throat got better and I was normal about a week. Two days ago I started with a dry cough and although my throat is less sore it is very scratchy. The cough concerns me. I am a 64 year old female in otherwise good health

Hello and thanks for your question. It is concerning that you developed a cough after having influenza. I think that you should see your doctor right away. One complication of influenza is pneumonia. This can be serious and needs to be considered in anyone developing a cough after they have had the flu. If you have fevers and shortness of breath, I would consider going to emergency for evaluation. If it is just a dry cough with no fever then try to see your doctor soon.

General & Family Physician Dr. Nilesh Soni's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
I understand your concern.
You have said that you got H1N1 Influenza 3 weeks back. Than you had headache and sore throat for 2 weeks followed by complete remission except tiredness for a week.
Based on the details given by you, it appears that you have got treated from H1N1 influenza and your current complaints are due to some other viral infection of throat.
In this situation, there is nothing to worry. You should do gargles using chlorhexidine in 1:3 dilution with water. You can also do gargles using warm water and salt if chlorhexidine is not available with you although it will be less effective. You should also use lozenges 2-3 times a day which will be readily available OTC. Take this remedies till your symptoms subsides.
Be watchful for aggravation of cough, cough with sputum, blood while coughing, high fever, chest pain while breathing or difficulty in breathing. If any of these is present, than consult ER immediately.
I hope this will be helpful.
Take care.
