Suggest Remedy For Ear Pain And Pressure Post Flying
Flew from a city at 2,000 ft. above sea level to San Diego. First leg of trip could not get my ears to pop. Four days on the ground and it came and went. Flew back today and the pressure and pain are in full swing. Landed five hours ago. Have taken psudophed (the real stuff). Taken advil and fexofenadine. If it doesn t get better, should I wait until I have inflammation or signs of fever, or is that too late. I have no health care so I guess I would go to minor emergency. What do you say, doc?
Well, it looks like Ear Barotrauma that commonly occurs due to change in pressure between outside and inside of the ear leading to pain and fullness in ear. When the flight takes off and descends there is rapid change in pressure outside and the ear pressure could not equalizes with the outside pressure causing pain and fullness. It commonly gets better as the pressure equalizes but in case if the ear canal gets blocked with fluid accumulation then the symptoms can persist.
You should not wait for signs of inflammation or fever as it does not need to be an infection. You can try taking Nasal Decongestant drops or spray and see if it improves. You can take another dose of Fexofenadine and also Advil if pain is not tolerable. Avoid trying to pop the ear to hard as it can increase pain and also can cause eardruminjury. Avoid putting anything deep into the ear like earbuds to avoid injury and infection.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
