Suggest Remedy For Elevated Bilirubin Level

Hello,

My baby is just 14 days old. She was having Jaundice since 3rd day. Then she has been kept in the phototherapy for about 5 days. Her bilirubin reduced from 15.2 to 13.0. Now again after 5 days, it has increased to 14.5. We have also exposed her to sun light for 3 days.

Please advise any medical help to be taken & how to control this?

Thanks,

Muneer.

Hi, I'am Dr Suresh K Yadav MD (paediatrics), I had gone through your question and understand your concerns,

Your baby is 13 days old , 14.5 bilirubin level is not normal for this age . She needs investigations and examination to know cause of this increased bilirubin. If everything is normal it may be simple exaggerated physiologic jaundice or breast milk jaundice which sometimes takes time to decrease . But rising level is a reason of concern and may require interventions like phototherapy .

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions

Take care.

Hi...I don't think you should worry about this. There will be ups and down in this. I suggest you check the bilirubin level in another 5 days and I am sure it will be coming down and if so not to worry. if after 5 days the bilirubin level is still the same or going up, then you need to get back to your pediatrician for further evaluation like hypothyroidism or breast milk jaundice.

Meanwhile what you are doing is fine, showing her to sunlight. Please continue that.

exposure to sunlight is completely useless as the child does not get the correct wavelength of light to reduce bilirubin. if your child was born in normal gestation, then 14.5 bilirubin at 14 days should not be a problem. just get a serum TSH level done to rule out hypothyroidism. Also get mother and baby blood grouping done to look for incompatibility.if the child has a cephalhematoma on its head, it can also lead to prolonged jaundice. their is nothing to be worried about at this point. repeat the bilirubin level after 1 week.
