Suggest Remedy For Heart Ailments In An Elderly Person

My cousin, Steven, now 65 years old, is retired. However, he has said he has congestive heart problems. Can you give/write advice/suggestions on foods he can have in his diet, exercise schedule, etc? He's now retired and presently lives alone, though has many friends.

Sincerely,
Tomi

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern for your friend.
Congestive heart failure needs to be treated primarily with cardiotonic drugs. Also, he needs to take diuretics to prevent fluid retention in tue body. He needs to keep a regular follow-up with monitoring by means of blood pressure, ECG and echocardiogram.
However, he needs to take care of maintaining blood pressure within normal limits.
He needs to avoid excessive salt in the diet and should not consume fatty foods. He needs to consume normal healthy diet containing good quantity of vegetables, pulses and fruits.
Mild to moderate exercise like going for walking in the morning and evening 15 minutes each time is recommended. He can practice meditation to keep his mind calm and composed.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
Wish him good health.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Congestive heart failure may be due to different causes but the main cause is hypertension.

His diet should be low salt with a wide range of fruits and vegetables. He may need to restrict his fluid intake somewhat to avoid excess stress on the heart.

In terms of exercise, this would depend on his heart capacity/ability which would have been determined by investigations such as echo or treadmill.

He needs to have tight control of any risk factors such as his blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes if present.

I hope this helps
