Suggest Remedy For Heartburn, Shortness Of Breath And Feeling Of Blockage In Throat

I am an obese 63 yr old woman. I have had Reflux in the past (six years) but was not experiencing the injection of bile into my esophagus for the last two years. But recently I feel a rapid heartburn, a shortness of breath and a sudden painful tightening or blockage where the diaphragm and sternum region is. I feel like I am prevented from swallowing due to the stricture/blockage, but after about 45-seconds or so, it fades. At lunch, I sat down to chicken fried rice, broccoli tops and ginger chicken. But immediately after starting with three forks of rice, I felt the tightening for about 20 seconds and then regurgitated about 1 1/2 ounce of thick clear bubbly stomach content. No chest pressure or arm pain is noted. I think I was told I had a hiatal hernia about 25 years ago, but there was no follow-up ordered or requested.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Do not take wrong food, avoid fried oily fatty food, citrus fruits, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, caffeinated drinks, chocolate, fatty food, etc. Take fiber rich food, avoid constipation. Take laxatives at bed time. You can take antacids to neutralize your stomach acids. Take digestives.

Maintain healthy BMI. If obese, lose weight; do regular walking and exercises. Take PPIs like pantoprazole (Protonix), and rabeprazole (Aciphex). However, you are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get required blood tests, endoscopy and if required biopsy done to rule out any stricture or blockage of the the esophagus or any developing peptic ulcer. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
