Suggest Remedy For Heavy And Irregular Periods Due To Uterine Fibroids

I have heavy & irregular periods since menarche. At first it was diagnosed as DUB, but since the past 10 years, i have been found to have fibroid uterus. It was also then when i started having 3-4 days of spotting before my actual periods begin. Have tried Ovral G, which worked for a couple of years but then it started giving me excessive nausea and diarrhea so i stopped it. Took sevista for a while, which stopped the spotting altogether but substantially increased the flow making my periods even more heavier and irregular. I have also had cryo for cervical erosion about 10 years ago and am NED till now. I have excrutiating lower abdomen pain during first 3 days as well, not the cramping kind, but the gas trapped in the pelvic organs kind, which gets better with diclogesic TID. Please suggest something for the fibroids as i do not want to take the surgical route. My OB/GYN says the only way for me to get rid of them is to have the uterus removed. i am nulli para and want to go for IVF but am scared of hormone treatments due to severe reaction to earlier Tx and also because of failure due to fibroids. Please suggest a way to get rid of the fibroids so my heavy flow reduces & i can have a better chance towards conception

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Size of the fibroids is not the only factor which should be considered. It depends on symptoms such as bleeding or pain, if surgery will be performed or not.

Also it is recommended if heavy uterine bleeding and/or anemia has continued after several months of therapy with birth control hormones and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

Since you are in menopause, it may be reasonable to have hormonal therapy first and then if this is unsuccesful, surgery can be performed.

The treatment then include myomectomy or hysterectomy can be done through one or more small incisions using laparoscopy, through the vagina, or through a larger abdominal cut.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein
