Suggest Remedy For Lower Back Pain That Radiates To The Legs

I m 49 yr old female. I take medication for thyroid (a radiation ablation years ago killed too much of my thyroid gland - thus requiring me to take supplement), medication for severe migraines, diuretic for persistent swelling, potassium. I have been diagnosed 10+ years as having chronic depression. (Deep-deep depression is how one of my psychiatrist called it.) I was born with hip dysplasia - and wore brace first six months of my life. I ve always had weak joints in my lower body - Low back, Hips, Knees, and Ankles -- even toes. --- OK - given that background -- Here s my question -- I ve been having some severe low back pain for several months now -- The pain has started to radiate down my legs - generally along the outer part of my thigh. This pain has been amplified by the extra strain placed on the knees - not liking the additional stress to maintain balance. And the last straw - over the last week -- I ve had odd feelings in my legs -- tingling, numbness, feeling as if slacks I was wearing were wet - as if I had spilled something on them, feeling as if bugs were crawling on me. Trying hard to understand... Beth

Hello,

Your latest symptoms for which you are seeking advise:
1) Severe low back pain
2) Severe pain along both legs especially radiating down the outer parts of thigh
3) Severe tingling sensation all over the legs
4) Associated with numbness of legs occasionally.

These are classic symptoms of neurological pain meaning pain arising due to the compression of nerves at the vertebral level. You have been suffering from intervertebral disc or joint problem called lumbar spondylitis. This can be confirmed by an MRI scan of spine. The following are treatment options for lumbar spondylitis:
1) Compulsory bed rest getting up only for washroom
2) To relief pain, tab. Pregabalin 75mg daily once as you have kidney problem.
3) It's better not to use NSAID s as your kidney functioning is not good and you use diuretic.
4) You can go for opioids like Codeine, Tramadol etc.
5) You can use tab. Acetaminophen to reduce inflammation of disc.

If all the above measures fail to reduce your pain and tingling sensation, the following are suggested:
1) Injection of a combination of steroid and local anesthetic into epidural space
2) The same injection can be given at the facet joint of the affected vertebrae under ultrasound or C-arm guidance.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
