Suggest Remedy For Muscle Strain Post Laminectomy

I was dealing with chronic low back pain for years. In may of this year I got a spinal cord stimulator put in to take away the pain. It is working GREAT! However, when I got the surgery they did a laminectomy of the T8 to put the lead in. Now I am experiencing terrible pain or what feels like a muscle strain and I also have numbness off to the right side of my mid back. It feels like I was body slammed into a wall. It burns, tender and feels like my muscle is stretching. Is this normal? Could something have happened to the muscle when the neurosurgeon did the surgery. I am doing ice and heat. However it is temporary. What do you think. I am a 45 year old female, weight 140 lbs and I am 5 7 . What is going on?

Hi,

From an orthopedic point of view, I strongly suggest you to review the whole matter with your spine. There is nothing wrong with placing you a stimulator, but, you must keep in mind that, at the age of 45, there are probably structural issues that could be solved before embarking on a pain modulation treatment.

My suggestion is to check your spine with a spine surgeon with a CT scan, an MRI, and evaluate if the stimulator is worth it, or if there are additional problems going on that might perpetuate you pain despite the use of stimulators or bombs. A spinal surgery, when properly indicated, is lifesaving in terms of quality of life.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Gonzalo Escobar, Orthopedic Surgeon
