Suggest Remedy For Nagging Cough

My husband has had a nagging cough for two weeks. He had an appointment with his physician for another reason, and his doctor refused to talk about his cough, but only said that if it continued, he may have to order an upper respiratory x-ray. What can be done to alleviate his cough in the meantime?
