Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yes. My dentist said I had erosive oral lichen planus Im pretty sure its not cancer but its taken a long time to go away. It started out bad and has over a year subsided to a manageable point. The oral surgeon dr said its an autoimmune issue caused by stress, etc. I had been under stress for awhile. I'm in very good health other wise, work out, etc. I hold in my mouth MCT oil twice a day from my holistic Dr, which is a combination coconut and palm oils. I'm going for a planned deep cleaning this week. Is there any oral antibiotic or something strong that I could ask my doctor for? I can't really afford a biopsy. Thank You Jeff
Hi Dear, Welcome to HCM. Understanding your concern.
Well lichen planus is not an infectious disease and related to genetic factors . The disorder occurs when the immune system mounts an attack against cells of the oral mucous membranes for unknown reasons . Stress may be exaggerated factor and not a causative factor .
But there are some factors which can trigger the condition like hepatitis c , flu vaccine or some medicines like blood pressure medicine and NSAIDs .
There are limited treatment options for oral lichen planus . The symptoms may last for more then simple lichen planus and sometime go away after long period also but they also have tendency to develop into cancer.
But there are options like steroid drugs ( as you also mention in query) . methotrexate. and vitamin supplement like folic acid .
Tacrilimus is also known to be effective in oral lichen planus .
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
