Suggest Remedy For Pain After Suffering A Prolapsed Disc

I ve just had surgery to remove a prolapsed disc, l5/s1, all went well and I ve been getting more active and have slowly reduced the pain meds I was on but over the past couple of weeks the pain has returned, it s nearly as bad as it was when it was most painful before the op. I m waiting to have another mri scan next week, w I also have 2 disc crumbled in the sciatic section. I d like to know what lies ahead for me? I m guessing the less discs I have, the more problems I ll have, and the more pain. What can be done? Should something be done now it does it need to get worse first? Thanks and sorry for so many questions. Kim.

Hi Kim.

The prolapsed IVD was corrected by your surgeon. Prolapse means a pulp like substance which is acting as buffer between two discs to maintain gap, protrudes out through a crack and exerts pressure on nerves causing pain. The gap between discs also lessens thus again exerting pressure on nerves.

There are varied reasons of prolapse from trauma to infection. Surgery helps to remove pressure on nerves by correcting annulus purposes and maintaining gap. But it doesn't guarantee that it will not re happen.

Being Ayurveda doctor I know that there are some preventing procedures and herbs which strengthen muscles of back and indirectly helping vertebral column to maintain gap. These also strengthen nerves to withstand mild pressures enabling lesser feeling of pain. This is only an adjuvant to physiotherapy aimed at, again, maintaining IVD gaps.

Thus I would suggest the best thing is preventing bending, jerks, trauma and doing physiotherapy. Pain killers is not the remedy. Operation is done in extreme conditions when traction and lumbar belt support is not effective.

Hope this gives you motivation to adopt preventive measures and may chose to get support of safe herbal therapy.

May I help you more please.
