Suggest Remedy For Pain And Soreness In Mouth After Removing Braces

Hi Dr. I recently got my braces off and am now wearing invasalign retainers. My mouth became sore, as expected, but over the course of today it became harder and harder to talk without the right side under my jaw hurting. It hurts even more now and every time I swallow it hurts and feels like im swallowing a ball. At first I thought it was the retainer but now I'm not sure. Should I worry about this? Do you know what it is?
Thanks

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain pain and soreness in mouth can be due to wearing of the new retainers as initial adjustment phase is going on and any new hard thing placed against soft tissues can cause its irritation and soreness.

In case of irritation caused due to soreness Numbing gels like Oragel can be applied.

Pain under the jaw and difficulty in swelling can be due to infection in throat leading to inflammation of the tonsils leading to enlargement of the tonsils and pain in swallowing..

I would suggest you to consult your dentist back and get a check-up done and in case if it is due to throat infection you should consult a physician and get evaluated that whether it is bacterial or viral infection..

In case of bacterial infection antibiotics can be relieving..

In case of viral infection anti viral medicines are not taken as they do not provide relief..

For both bacterial and viral infection few treatments can be:

Do warm saline gargles.
Throat lozenges can be sootheing..
In case of pain Ibuprofen can be taken as it helps in relieving pain and inflammation..
Sip on luke warm water throughout the day to maintain hydration ans relieving the throat..
Avoid hard and spicy food...
Take a soft and nutritious diet..

Hope this information helps..

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

The symptoms you mention in your query are occurring due to invisalign retainer . This is totally normal to have such symptoms after invasilign retainer . This due to reaction of the mucosa to something new in the mouth .

It will take around week to get to normal . tissue will get adapt to the new material and return to normal.

I would suggest you to do warm salt rinsis 3-4 times a day , Also do dexamethasone rinses twice a day to reduce swelling and apply topical benzocaine gel (orabase) to the sores .

If condition persist even after a week then consult orthodontist for proper examination . Doctor may prescribe medicine like sucralfate (very effective for sores) or steroid medication .

Doctor may also change the material of retainer if it doesn't accepted by your body or grind the sharp edges of retainer if there is any ( they can also irritate mucosa and cause soreness .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
