Suggest Remedy For Pain In Hand

My husbands hands are getting knots between the thumb and pointer finger. It cramps on him and is very painful. I tried massaging it and putting heat on it. It helped a little but it keeps cramping up and almost impossible for him to stretch his hand out. What can I do for him that will give him some relief?
