Suggest Remedy For Pain In Left Side Radiating To Abdomen With History Of Renal Calculi

I am an RN. Known history of renal calculi. left flank pain, radiating to my abdomen. tolerable pain. urinating okay, don t appear to have hematuria, urine is clear and yellow. pain has been constant for about a week now. no fever, chills, sweats, no nausea or vomiting. I have increased my water intake. should I just wait out the pain, keep hydrated and hope the stone passes, or should I go to the E.R.?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

With such presentations in my clinic, I would recommend my patients to wait and continue hydrating, drinking as much as 1.9 to 2.8 liters fluids a day so it may help flush out your urinary system. Passing a small stone can cause some discomfort.
In order to relieve your mild pain, I would recommend pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others), acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve).

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
