Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.
I can understand your concern. The dent can be either injury site depressed with swollen tissue around it or
depression in skull bone. The main point is if your mother is conscious, oriented, having no deficit, no
vomiting, then the injury is not serious. The dent in skull bone may persist for life as it is harmless. If patient is having cosmetic issues, then it can be corrected. Another entity which needs consideration is depressed fracture. Sometime it needs surgical correction.
The diagnosis can only be confirmed after proper evaluation by doctor. He might advise
CT scan of head to find out skull
bone fracture or dent. Meanwhile, at home you can observe her for alarming signs of
head injury which are
: vomiting
: loss of consciousness
: bleeding through ear/nose/throat
: decreasing consciousness
: onset of new focal deficit
: persistent headache not relieving from painkillers
If your mother does not have any of these symptoms, then do not worry. She will recover in few days. You can apply icepacks at injury site to relieve pain and swelling.
Thanks. Hope it will help you. Take care.
