One of my residents has large fluid filled sacks under each eye. He is 65, but young for his age, heavy smoker. He does not engage with healthcare ect due to paranoid schizophrenia. Any ideas? he s had for over a week, initially looks like swollen eyes/allergy/heavy cold but I looked closely and it it definately looks like fluid/water

Hi,

Here are some general remedies that may help reduce periorbital puffiness:
* Quit smoking: Smoking can contribute to fluid retention and inflammation, which may exacerbate periorbital puffiness. Quitting smoking can have numerous health benefits and may help improve the condition of your resident skin and reduce puffiness.
* Stay hydrated: Drinking an adequate amount of water can help flush out excess fluid and reduce puffiness. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day, or more if you engage in physical activities or live in a hot climate.
* Limit salt intake: High sodium levels can lead to fluid retention and worsen puffiness. Reduce your consumption of processed and packaged foods, which tend to be high in sodium, and opt for fresh, whole foods instead. Be mindful of the salt you add to your meals while cooking.
* Apply cold compresses: Placing a cool compress or chilled cucumber slices over your eyes can help constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling. You can also use chilled tea bags or refrigerated spoons to achieve a similar effect.
* Elevate your head while sleeping: Sleeping with your head slightly elevated by using an extra pillow may help prevent fluid accumulation around the eyes during the night.
* Use topical treatments: Over-the-counter creams or serums containing ingredients like caffeine, vitamin K, aloe vera, or cucumber extract may provide temporary relief by soothing the area and reducing puffiness. However, their effectiveness can vary, so it's best to consult with a dermatologist for suitable recommendations.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
