Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Last Friday I went to the emergency room with continuous coughing interfering with breathing. I also had shaking chills. They said it was pneumonia. They also said I have hypoxia. Does pneumonia cause hypoxia? I have been on oxygen most of the time since. Will I have to continue this indefinitely? What can I do to improve the situation? Ann
The answer to your question is yes, pneumonia causes hypoxia. Unless there is another cause for your hypoxia, then it should improve as your pneumonia improves. Were you treated with antibiotics? If so this will help you get better. Make sure you take them. It will also help for you to work on trying to cough up the mucus/phlegm. Some over the counter medications also help you clear mucus such as guaifenesin (also known as mucinex).
I hope you feel better soon! Dr. Serieux
