Hi,
Many factors can contribute to
constipation in babies. In such babies coming to me, I used to suggest few dietary changes- Include lot of fibre rich items in diet and to drink enough water. Fibre combined with water can loosen stools. Fibre rich items include wholegrain cereals, oats, fruits, sweetcorn, carrot, broccoli, sweet potato, peas/beans and many other fruits and vegetable. Always prefer whole grain wheat/rice over refined ones.
Initial de-loading with
bisacodyl suppository and a short course of laxatives like
lactulose or
cremaffin will help most of the cases. They are them maintained on the above said measures. Regular toilet habits is also important. Habitual retention can further worsen the situation. For occasional resistant case, I used to order
thyroid function test and serum calcium, followed by barium study if needed.
Also, iron supplement (tonoferon) can contribute to constipation. Since he has passed infancy and anemia is ruled out, you can request your doctor to whether we can discontinue iron(in preterms, we usually give till 1 year).
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
