Suggest Remedy For Severe Fever In An Infant

Hi my 16 months old daughter has been having a fever for 6 days now, while she was shivering her lips turned purple, temperature up to 100.5 and sometimes over, her urine has a strong smell to it, I took her to the emergency on the 4th day of her fever and just told me to keep giving her Advil. I called the paramedics to check her on today, she has no chest infections or ear infections she s breathing fine. What s causing this fever to go on for 6 days?

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have severe fever in an infant along with shivering which is a sign of viral or bacterial infection. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to give your child short course of antibiotics such as Amoxicillin or azithromycin for 5-7 days along with Antihistamine such as Chlorpheniramine. You should use room humidifier and vapor rub that will give benefits to your child. Steam inhalation is very effective but you have to be very careful while giving it to your child. You should use throat lozenges and go rinses with warm saline water. Take diet rich in vitamin B12. Visit pediatrician once and get it examined. Get blood and urine test done and start treatment after proper diagnosis.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

I read your full query and understand the concern.

Your 16 months child's fever could be due to urinary tract infection which could be mostly bacterial or sometimes viral infection.Since there is no chest or ear infection which rules out upper respiratory or ENT infection.

He should have some routine blood works,ESR,urine examination as advised by the doctor.

So,it would be better you take advise from pediatrician rather than giving him just symptomatic treatment like ibuprofen (advil).

He may require oral antibiotics with antipyretics and antihistamines.

Regards,
