Suggest Remedy For Severe Pain Caused Due To Charlie Horse In Leg

During the night last night I had a severe Charlie hose in my leg. It was very painful, I couldn t move my leg and it lasted about 10 minutes. Today my leg is weak and my one large vein is seems very agitated and I am wondering if I should apply heat or cold. I am trying to elevate it as much as possible.

Hi,
Thanks for contacting HCM. In the case of a 'Charlie Horse' the muscle in the calf area can contract very strongly and cause fatigue the next day due to the power and effort the muscle endures for that length of time. It is possible a vein got irritated during this process and I will see it in my patients as a superficial thrombophlebitis. I recommend warm, not hot, compresses to the area. I also recommend to patients that get these types of cramps to try to have a sip of tonic water before going to bed to decrease the likelihood of cramping.
I hope this answers your question. If you have any further questions, I am here to help.
Thanks.
