Hi,
Post
hip fracture repair is the time we must be very vigilant about the patient. arm swelling and lower
limbs swelling may be due to 2 different causes. The following are the causes of arm swelling:
1)
Superficial thrombophlebitis or inflammation of affected vein at the IV site on arm. Painful swelling is common.
Treatment for this condition is:
1) Removal of the cannula
2) Application of warm compressors to the swelling
3) The arm with swelling must be raised above the heart level
Both lower extremities swelling may be due to the following reasons:
1) Deep
venous thrombosis which is very dangerous and common after a hip fracture repair and is to be treated immediately
2) Thrombophlebitis of leg
3) Acute
kidney injury
4) Chronic kidney disease
5) Heart failure
6) Lymphedema
7) Pulmonary hypertension
Among all the above very common after hip fracture surgery is the deep venous thrombosis due to prolonged resting or being inactive for long time. So please consult the operating surgeon or any physician to rule out the above cause that needs to be treated immediately.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
