Suggest Remedy For Swelling On Throat And Face After Novocain Shots
Our 3 yr old was given two novocain shots by two different doctors within one hour. He was taken to the urgent care facility because of a change in his voice, throat swelling and face swollen. They put an ice pack and gave him Benedril and was taken to Emergency by ambulance - as a result of the throat swelling. What do you think will be expected ?
Clearly your child suffered a hypersensitivity reaction to Novocaine. The following are treatment steps for a hypersensitivity reaction: 1) Immediately the trigger must be removed or the drug must be stopped. 2) Antihistamines like Benadryl is given 3) Hydrocortisone injection is to be given 4) If necessary, injection epinephrine is to be given intramuscular 5) Airway is to be secured by preventing tongue falling back and if airway edema is too much, intubation can be done to prevent aspiration 6) Blood pressure and heart rate are to be monitored
As your kid is already under medical supervision, you don't need to worry. The condition is temporary. Swelling responds well and fast to corticosteroids.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
