Suggest Remedy For Swollen Foot Due To Meth Injection

A friend of mine shot up meth in my foot and a day or two later it swelled up really bad. He went to the doctor but was too embarrassed to tell the truth He just told the doctor he didn t know why it was swollen. He is treating it with bactrim and said it was a bug bite probably and it got infected and now He has have cellulitis. Would the treatment be different if he told the truth and does he need to be worried?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the cellulitis from meth injection use is different in that way, it is due to chemical spillage outside the blood vessel, which is more dangerous than a bug bite. The causative organism consists of gram negative and positive with certain anaerobes from the surface as well.

There is significant differences in the management as the meth injection person may require higher range of antibiotics in form of injections of penicillin with beta lactam, cephalosporins or monobactam, vancomycin or others. Immediately consult your doc office and get further assistance in this regard. Till that time:
- Local application of ice
- Keep the leg elevated over 3 pillows support when resting
- Avoid pressure bearing without hard and fast jobs
- Continue current medication
Maneuvers will help you.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
