Suggest Remedy For Swollen Lips And Nose Bleed After Injury

Hi doctor,
My 4 year old son fell on his face yesterday night and his nose and lips started bleeding heavily but stopped after 5 minutes or so. After a few minutes he became quite normal and was very active. Now I can't see any swelling or anything on his nose but his lips are swollen and he looks very different now. He says his nose doesn't pain but I am worried. Should I consult a doctor urgently??
Thanks.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain bleeding from nose and lips after fall on face is due to sudden traumatic injury to the soft tissues leading to laceration of the mucosa and rupture of small blood vessels leading to bleeding..

Nasal bleeding occurs as there is profuse blood supply in the nose due to a mesh of blood vessels known as "Little's Area" and traumatic injury like fall can cause trauma to the little's area and cause nasal bleeding..

As bleeding and even swelling on nose has subsided, it is a good sign and swelling on lips is due to accumulation of inflammatory exudate and spilled blood from the blood vessels post injury..

Nothing to worry as the swelling will subside gradually although can take from 3 to 4 days to about a week..
Do cool compresses over the lips..
If there is any skin tear or laceration apply antiseptic ointment over it.
Give him Ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and pain.

In case if the swelling does not reduce or the condition worsen consult a Paediatrician or a general physician and get him evaluated..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
