Emergency Medicine Specialist, Dr. Tim Evans's Response
Hi. The aspects that concern me are: impact sufficient to trigger air bags; transient loss of consciousness; amnesia of events; persistent pain in the head despite regular analgesia; suspected altered state of alertness. I would suggest that, given your symptoms are ongoing, you return to the Emergency Department who treated you initially, if possible, as you may need to undergo a CT scan of your head to exclude any significant intracranial injury - bleeding or bruising to the brain. If your doctor confirms that your symptoms are down to whiplash, then this has a very variable prognosis. Some peoples' symptoms will last a few days, others may have ongoing pain for many weeks. Regular range of movement exercises and a good analgesic regime will be necessary if this is the case.
