Suggest Remedy For Throbbing, Inflammed, Pus Filled Lump Between Upper Lip And Nose

Thank you! I have had a hard small lump between my upper lip and under the bridge of my nose for over a year now. A month or so ago, I started to soak it and poked it with a needle whereupon it bled and some puss came out. However it just seemed to fill up again so I have been doing the same thing once a week or so. Yesterday it was quite red and inflamed and was throbbing. I have been putting polysporin on it etc. Do you have any idea what it might be----it has a small centre to it(an ingrown hair mayby)---not sure but I`m thinking that I should mayby see a doctor about it. I spent a few moths in Asia last winter. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. Thanks for your help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the symptoms described, the lump may be a skin abscess or a boil. It is important to seek medical attention from a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.

In the meantime, applying a warm compress to the affected area for 10-15 minutes several times a day may help reduce pain and inflammation and promote drainage of the pus. Do not attempt to squeeze or puncture the abscess with a needle, as this can make the infection worse and lead to further complications.

OTC pain relievers like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen, may also help alleviate pain and reduce fever. Avoid using any topical creams, ointments, or oils unless prescribed by a healthcare provider.

It is important to keep the affected area clean and avoid touching or picking at the abscess, as this can spread the infection. If the abscess does not improve or if you experience other symptoms such as fever, chills, or swelling, seek medical attention immediately.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
