Hi Doctor - My mother went thru a whipple surgery exactly 1 yr back. It was for a neuroendocrine type and non malignant. No complication after the surgery except she is suffering constant weight loss (from 66 kgs to 46 kgs in 8 months). Her diet is ok and she feels very bitter metal taste in the mouth after taking the pancreatin enzyme (creon). She tried altering the dose a lot but the bad taste occurs for 2-3 hrs after taking the enzyme along with the meal. Can you please suggest any alternative of the enzymes? Thanks, Piyu
Abdominal surgeries such as whipples do cause weight loss postoperatively, due to the stress of the surgery itself and because a portion of the g.i. tract is removed which impairs nutrient absorption. The medication that she is on (creon) is a pancreatic enzyme to combat the loss of pancreatic enzyme secretion due to removal of a portion of the pancreas. It is necessary or else she may develop bloating , abdominal pain and fullness after her meals. You can try to give it to her along with the main meal. Another option would be to reduce the dose she is currently taking. Please consult your health care provider before making any changes.
