Suggest Remedy To Treat Barotrauma

Hi, I recently took a flight in Asia and had a slight upper respiratory tract infection (congestion and sore throat), during the descent I experienced significant pain and loss of hearing in my right ear (despite yawning, chewing and sucking on a boiled sweet. The muffled hearing remains 5 days later, and having consulted a local doctor I m told I have barotrauma of the middle ear (with some blood and fluid, but my ear drum and all bones are in tact). The loss of hearing is really bothering me, and I m wondering if there s anything I can take? Bearing in mind I m sensitive to stimulants and prone to tachycardia, so xylo and PSE decongestants aren t really an option for me. I still have mild symptoms of my URI and am taking strepsils and using Saline spray. Any advice most welcome, as I need to take a flight in 2-3 weeks time. Thanks, AR

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, thank you for posting your query on health care magic.

Looking at your symptoms, you might be suffering from Eustachian tube blockage due to upper respiratory tract infection. It is a tube which connects the middle ear with the nose and is responsible for equalization of middle ear pressure with outer atmospheric pressure. In case of tube blockage, middle ear pressure becomes negative leading to fluid collection due to which you are suffering from muffled hearing in your ear.

You may get relief by taking Oral Antihistamines like Cetrizine, Nasal steroid spray like Mometasone, Mucolytic the Ambroxol, Anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen .

Continue Saline nasal spray.

Also do steam inhalation.Avoid cold food and very sweet food as they increase mucus production.Drink lots of fluids (warm) as they help in break down of mucus secretions.Avoid dust, smoke and other pollutants.

Hope this answers your question.Take care.
