My son is 15 and about 165 lbs. He has been taking Vyvanse for about two or three years. He lives with his father and his father and step mother refuse to refill his script and now have him on 1000mg of magnesium, fish oil and Focus Formula (I think)...there is one other vitamin, but I am not sure what it is. They have also drastically changed his diet (no red food coloring). He says the magnesium makes him very dizzy and he has no strength or energy (it is taken at night - but it scares him when it happens) - he also complains about sleeping thru the first three hours of classes at school. Is "cold turkey" the way to go...and is the magnesium dosage too high for him - and does the holistic approach really work, or has he been sold a bill of goods?
FROM THE INFO PROVIDED, IT SEEMS UR SON IS ON VERY HIGH DOSES OF MAGNESIUM ALONG WITH FORMULA DIET. HERE ARE MY SUGGESTIONS- 1. ADHD REQUIRES SPECIFIC TREATMENT. TOO MUCH OF DIETARY RESTRICTIONS AND HIGH DOSES OF SUPPLEMENTS ARE NOT PROVEN TO BE OF BENEFIT AND MAY DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD
2.START HIM ON 20 MG OF ATOMOXETINE IN 2 DIVIDED DOSES. DOSE CAN BE INCREASED IF NEEDED AFTER A WEEK. CONSULT A PSYCHIATRIST WHO IS AN EXPERT IN BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATION FOR ADHD BECAUSE THAT CAN ALSO HELP.
3. AVOID FOODS CONTAINING PRESERVATIVES AND ARTIFICIAL COLORING SUBSTANCES. OTHER RESTRICTIONS IN FOOD ARE NOT NECESSARY.
4. KINDLY STOP MAGNESIUM. SUCH HIGH DOSES ARE LIKELY TO CAUSE MAG. TOXICITY AND PROVE DETRIMENTAL
